MICHAEL SCANTLEBURY Ph. D.

Dr. Michael Scantlebury joined the faculty of the Rosen College of Hospitality Management in August of 2005. He received his doctorate in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the University of Waterloo, where his research focussed on heritage tourism. His research interest is in the areas community-enterprise relationships in heritage tourism and barriers to heritage tourism development.

Dr. Scantlebury has worked in travel and tourism since 1985. His career began as a research officer for the Barbados Tourism (BTA). Throughout his career he also served the organization as a marketing manager and relocated to New York City as manager of US Operations. His last position with the BTA was as Vice President of Marketing and Sales. At other times in his career he was a consultant with Ernst & Young, and managed the regional tourism consulting practice for Coopers & Lybrand (Caribbean) Consultants Inc. He has extensive tourism consulting experience in the Caribbean and has also conducted assignments in Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Scantlebury earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of West Indies Mona in Jamaica, West Indies, and also earned a Certificate in Tourism Studies from the University of Surrey in England. Previously he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and was a sessional lecturer at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
